Hair Care for Women Who Are Always Tired and Never Have Enough Time

I am writing this post for the specific woman who knows exactly what her hair needs and simply does not have the bandwidth to do all of it all the time.

That is most of us. We know we should deep condition more. We know we should not sleep without protecting our hair. We know we should not use so much heat. We know all of it. We are just tired.

This post is not about adding more. It is about the minimum that actually matters and does most of the work.

The non-negotiables

Moisture. Dry hair breaks. Whatever else you do or do not do, your hair needs moisture. If you have natural African hair this is even more critical. The structure of tightly coiled hair makes it harder for the scalp’s natural oils to travel down the hair shaft, which means external moisture needs to fill that gap.

A simple LOC or LCO method, liquid, oil, cream in some order depending on your hair’s preferences, takes about ten minutes and significantly reduces breakage. That ten minutes is worth more than any other thing you could do for your hair.

On wash day when you have no energy

A co-wash instead of a full shampoo. Conditioner only, massaged into the scalp, rinsed out. It does not give you the same cleanse as shampoo but it refreshes, adds moisture, and takes twenty minutes less. For low energy weeks this is enough.

Deep conditioning does not require sitting under a dryer for forty-five minutes. Apply a deep conditioner, cover with a plastic cap, and go to sleep. The overnight deep condition is genuinely more effective than the short timed version.

On protective styling

The point of protective styling is to reduce manipulation and retain length. A simple bun, a plait, or braids serve this purpose. You do not need elaborate styles to protect your hair. You need your ends off your collar and your hands out of your hair.

You are allowed to take care of your hair in the simplest way available to you right now. The elaborate version exists for when you have the time and energy. The simple version exists for now.
