Why I Am Flying Into Incheon and What That Actually Means for Your First Day

Incheon International Airport is consistently rated one of the best airports in the world. It is not hype. It is genuinely impressive.

But more practically, understanding what Incheon means for your first day in Seoul is something most travel guides skip over, and it is actually very important for how you plan your arrival.

Incheon is not in Seoul

This surprises a lot of first-time visitors. Incheon Airport is located on Yeongjong Island, about 68 kilometres west of central Seoul. Depending on traffic and your mode of transport, getting from the airport to the city centre takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half.

This means if you land at 6am thinking you will be at your hotel by 7am and out exploring by 8am, you need to adjust that plan.

How to get into the city

The AREX Express Train is the fastest option. It runs directly from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station in approximately 43 minutes. From Seoul Station you can connect to the metro to reach most areas of the city. Buy your T-money card at the airport. You will use it for every form of public transport for your entire trip.

The all-stop AREX is cheaper but takes about 66 minutes. It stops at several stations along the way which can be useful if your accommodation is near one of those stops.

Taxis and private transfers exist and are convenient if you have a lot of luggage, but they are significantly more expensive and subject to traffic.

What to do when you land

Before you leave the airport, get your T-money card loaded. Pick up a pocket Wi-Fi or activate your roaming. If you are arriving in the morning and your room is not ready, consider leaving your large bag at the airport storage service and heading into the city light.

Your first day in Seoul is best spent adjusting to the time zone without heavy expectations. Walk somewhere beautiful. Eat something incredible. Sleep when your body tells you to.

The city will still be there tomorrow and the day after that. You have time.
